Chemical Industries and Plastics

The chemical industries sector is one of the diversified manufacturing sectors in Lebanon. Whether is so far as the number of branches are concerned or as the variations within each of the various branches are concerned. The schedule below gives a clear illustration of this sector:

1- Basic chemicals.
2- Soaps and detergents.
3- Cosmetics.
4- Paints and Varnishes.
5- Rubber.
6- Medical and Pharmaceutical products.
7- Oil refining.
8- Miscellaneous industries.

And the number of items produced by this sector is around 94 items. The survey carried out by the management of the Directory shows that the number of factories in this sector is 292 factory of 8 employees and above and it is distributed among the Mohafazat as follow: Mount Lebanon 201, Beirut 30, North Lebanon 28 Bekaa 17, South Lebanon 15 Nabatieh 10. As about the exporting markets of the chemical industries it remained till early years relying on the Arab Markets, but it has begun since 1986 to gradually enter the European market and especially: France, England, Italy (paints and pharmaceutical Products), Canada (paints and chemical industries), Australia (plastic industries) and part of African Countries. For Arab Countries of which is the mainly exporting countries are: S.A., Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, U.A.E. and Lybia.

This Industrial survey carried out by the Industrial directory co. (IDCO) till mid of 1998 covers firms employing 8 workers and above and which produces in a ------ typed manner.
